Like many technology companies, we have a relaxed office style. If we’re not meeting very serious business people, most of us come to work in an assortment of jeans, t-shirts and sneakers (or “trainers”, as we’re British). It’s not uncommon for staff to pad into meetings in just their socks – and brightly colored ones at that.
So my interest was piqued this morning when I spotted a couple of the developers looking very dapper in smart suits. In the office. When they didn’t have any meetings. And on a Friday. In summer.
Turns out Tommy and Mars decided while other, very corporate workplaces might have a “Dress down Friday” policy, that didn’t really fit our culture. So they decided to turn it on its head and try the reverse and called it “Formal Friday”.
Today they’re wearing shirts, suits and ties. To put this into context, the temperature in London lately has been the warmest it’s been all year – up to 30 degrees Celsius (mid-80s in Fahrenheit). If ever there was a day when it was perfectly excusable to crack out a pair of shorts, it was today.
Here are some photos of Tommy and Mars playing formal table tennis:
We’ll let you know if it catches on…
