SwiftKey beats Google to Webby Award

We are delighted to announce SwiftKey is the winner of a Webby Award for innovation – and it’s thanks to you.

We asked our users to vote for us, a plucky David up against Goliath Google, and you did us proud.

The Webbys are international awards that recognise the very best of online and mobile. They are the biggest accolades in the industry and to be pitched against such a famous and innovative company and win is absolutely thrilling.

We had a little help from Stephen Fry – who called on his 4.2 million Twitter followers to lend their support – but it was our thousands of users and dedicated members of our VIP forum who nudged us into first place.

CEO Jon Reynolds said: “To be pitched against a company such as Google, and beat them in a public vote, is an incredible moment for us.

“It goes to show you can be a small company and compete with industry giants.

“On behalf of the SwiftKey team, I’d like to thank the users who voted for us – not just the well-known ones such as Stephen Fry, but the thousands of people who understand that we put innovation at the heart of what we do.

“We owe special thanks to our 50,000-strong VIP forum community, whose feedback and passion are central to our success. I dedicate this win to their enthusiasm and engagement and to the commitment and skills of our growing team.”

It tops off an incredible six months for the SwiftKey team. We have topped six million downloads, hit the number one spot in Android’s global paid apps chart and picked up the coveted Most Innovative App prize at the mobile industry’s Oscars, the Global Mobile Awards. We also helped you save 50 billion keystrokes – or over 600 years worth of typing.

The rest of 2012 promises to be just as big – and to help us achieve that, we’re about to get bigger: expanding the team to include even more talented staff.

Above all, we pledge to keep putting innovation at the heart of all we do.

Thank you for your support.

:: The Webby Awards famously only allow five word acceptance speeches. The challenge is, which five words should we choose?

Guys, I think this win is incredible for you. I’ve used your product since it made its debut and it’s the only keyboard I’ve used since.

However, you’re reaching quite a bit in this article. Claiming that you’ve won against Google gives a false impression of the scope of the contest. In reality, you won the “People’s Voice” award in one category against one app that Google makes, and arguably one of its least popular ones to date. Swiftkey is available on nearly every Android device out right now (I’m too lazy to find out what the target/min SDK is). Google Wallet is very limited in its availability. Currently, only two phones (Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S) have the hardware capabilities and only on T-Mobile and Sprint is the app fully functioning “out of the box.”

All that being said, Google Wallet is the winner of the actual Webby award. Not Swiftkey. Based on whatever criteria the judges had, they chose Google Wallet as the winner. Not Swiftkey. I hope this doesn’t come off as trolling here, but I think you need a little dose of reality in your otherwise confused world you must live in. “CEO Jon Reynolds said: “To be pitched against a company such as Google, and beat them in a public vote, is an incredible moment for us.” Really? Guys, you did NOT “beat Google” in any but the smallest most insignificant sense.

You may want to check the website again. It shows Google Wallet as the winner of the Webby Award and SwiftKey as the People’s Voice winner.

Wow. It seems some people are just too easily upset about something that has nothing to do with them. Enjoy your win! Who cares what all the haters say.
